Mrs. Alma Jean (Hobbs) Spears was born to Alvin and Betty Hobbs on February 25, 1943. She graduated from Charlie Brown School, with the Class of 1960. Following her graduation, she attended barber school and earned her barber’s license. She later pursued her calling in healthcare by attending Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital, School of Nursing, where she became a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN).

Alma found great joy in the nursing profession and faithfully served her community through her work at the Brazoria County Health Department, where she retired after more than 30 years of dedicated service. She loved spending time with her family, traveling, and uplifting her community through service and leadership.

A devoted woman of faith, Alma was deeply involved in the church. She served diligently as a lifetime member of both the AME Lay Organization and the Women’s Missionary Society (WMS). Also in the AME church, she served as a Sunday School Superintendent, and as a Stewardess. She dedicated many years of faithful service within the AME Church.

Alma also served her community in civic leadership and was elected as a school board member for the Columbia-Brazoria Independent School District. In her later years, she actively volunteered at the local Senior Citizens Center. She was a proud member of the Black Nurses Association, where she served as a national LVN board member and participated in committees within the Black Nurses Association of Greater Houston.

Alma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leroy Spears; her parents, Alvin and Betty Hobbs; her siblings, Oliver Hobbs, Carnel Hobbs, Robert Hobbs, Alice Hobbs, Melvin Hobbs; and her beloved son, Andre Baldridge.

She is survived by her loving and devoted daughters, Cynthia Baldridge and Kathy Davis; her dear sister, Dora Culberson; her cherished grandchildren, Dietrich Baldridge, Raphael Frazier, Anastasia Frazier, Daizha Johnson, and Tristan Davis; her special nephew, Charles Cravens; her great-grandson, Kaiden Baldridge; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
