Alvin Smerek

Heaven has gained another hard working angel. Alvin Johnnie (Bubba) Smerek was born April 19, 1942 to Stephen and Stazie Smerek from Damon, who preceded him in death along with his brothers, Albert and Louis Smerek; his sisters Agnes and husband, Cecil Groze, and Josie and husband, Hank Uherek; and granddaughters, Kelsey Ann Schneider and Lacey Jo Smerek. He is survived by his wife, Agnes Smerek; his son, Steven and wife, Janie Smerek; his daughters, Shelly Schneider and husband, Bubba, Trisha DuBose, and Chrissy Sebesta and husband, Chris; and his grandchildren, Lindi and husband, Orin Stammann, Landon Smerek, Britney Kasmir, Chance Schneider, Jessi Kaye DuBose, Kasi Schneider, Kameron DuBose, and Caylie Sebesta; his brothers, Butch and wife, Belinda Smerek and Raymond Smerek; sister, Ann Miller and husband, Chris Jankowski; sisters-in-law, Norma Smerek and Vlasta Smerek; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Alvin worked at DOW Chemical for 35 years where everyone called him "Smokey." He loved farming, being with his family and friends, listening to polka music and you could find him any day on his Kubota tractor. He was an avid collector of farming equipment and antique car replicas, and he loved watching Westerns on television. Alvin was very loved and will be very missed. As the song Daddy's Hands by Holly Dunn says, "There was always love in daddy's hands."

Visitation will be Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, with a rosary being recited at 7:00 pm.

Funeral mass will be held 10:00 am Friday, January 10, 2020 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Damon. Burial will follow at Damon Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be BJ Schuelke, Tim Schuelke, Jim Schuelke, Roger Jones, Stormy Miller, and Chris Legendre. Honorary pallbearers will be Chance Schneider, Landon Smerek, Kameron DuBose, and Orin Stammann.
