In Memory of

Clara G. Matejka

December 18th, 1935 – July 15th, 2023

Clara G. Matejka passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 15th in Angleton, TX.  She was 87 years of age at the time.  She had a long and difficult road the past three years after suffering a stroke in 2020 along with vascular dementia.  But at last, her journey has ended, and she has been blessed with eternal peace with our Heavenly Father.  Clara was born in Richmond, Texas on December 18th, 1935, to Joseph Flisowski and Pearl Kubeczka Flisowski.

She married James Davis Matejka on October 28th, 1953, and they made their home in the Damon area on a small farm. Living on a family farm in the 1950’s and 60’s brought hard work, family values, and memories that lasted a lifetime and beyond.  Granny Matejka did it all: big gardens for canning, raising chickens, chopping cotton, tractor driving, plucking the down from geese for pillows and comforters, and some of the best homemade bread and kolaches & rolls.  There was nothing better than getting home from school on a cold winter day to the smell of cinnamon rolls baking in the oven.  After James passed away in 1982 Clara went to work at Watt’s Grocery in the meat market.  The Watts and Lytle families treated their employees like family, and the store and its employees became Granny’s adopted family.  She enjoyed those days serving all the local customers. Between a selection of the best T-bone steak or a pound of bologna, there was always time to visit about family, church, politics, or the weather.  Many friendships were made at that meat counter and carried on for years to come.

Clara leaves behind her loving family; a son, Gary Matejka and wife, Nancy of Brenham; daughter, Trisha Wleczyk and husband, Michael of West Columbia; grandchildren, Lisa Cantrell and husband, Jeff of Dripping Springs; Jacie Blumberg of Angleton; Colin Matejka of Austin; and Sara Wleczyk of West Columbia; great-grandchildren, Coy, Kami, Kimber, Kasyn, Joseph, and Katie; along with numerous family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband; sisters, Sophie Prihoda, Martha Gutowsky, Rosie Wleczyk, Helen Mutina, Hattie Pekar, Nancy Dvorak; and brother Edmond Flisowski.

Clara’s children welcome relatives and friends to her visitation on Saturday July 22nd from 11:30am – 1:00 pm at St John the Apostle Catholic Church 807 Loggins Dr.  West Columbia, TX.  Rosary will be recited at 1:00pm, Funeral Mass to begin at 1:30pm with Father Preston Quintela officiating.  The family requests all in attendance to join them in the church hall during the visitation for light refreshments.  Clara will be laid to rest beside her husband following her mass at Needville Public Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Franklin Joe Mazac, Russell Mazac, Brett Vazansky, Jimmy Lee Prihoda, David Matejka and Coy Cook.

The children of Granny Matejka wish to share their sincere appreciation to all those who expressed kind words, support, and prayers during their time of sorrow.  A special “thank you” to the nurses, med-techs, aids, and support staff at Country Village in Angleton, TX for the love, care, and friendship they provided for Granny over the years.  Also, to the nurses from AMED-Choice Hospice for the compassion and guidance they provided through Granny’s journey home.

In lieu of flowers, the family request your kindness be made towards one of the following organizations:  American Stroke Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, or St. John’s the Apostle local St. Vincent de Paul Society helping those in need locally.
