On Friday, June 23, 1933, God gifted Dorothy Pearl Lewis to the late Fletcher Norwood Lewis & Beatrice Birdie Black-Lewis. She was the youngest of 8 children in this union. Dorothy attended West Columbia public schools during segregation and graduated from Charlie Brown High School in the Class of 1953. She was a trumpeter, athlete and avid basketball player, well known for giving them the old “left hook shot”.
In 1956, Dorothy married her “Honey” -- Joe Louis Fisher (d. 1998) of Markham, Texas. Together they reared three children -- Ronald Elliott, Darryl Glen (d. 1956), and Donna Jo. Dorothy was wildly patriotic and traveled the world with her spouse who was a sergeant E-7 in the US Army. Together with their children, they lived in Germany, Ft. Hood, and many US locations before settling their family back in West Columbia. Having no formal education, Dorothy bragged about earning a highly prestigious degree in domestic engineering from the School of Life as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Affectionately known as Babe, Baby Sister, Sister Fisher, and Mother Fisher, Dorothy spent her life kindling laughter and encouraging others through cards, photos, and more. She was a self-made historian who played a pivotal role in preserving the history of her alma mater Charlie Brown High School after it closed following school desegration. She was also a photographer for the Christian Senior Citizens Center in West Columbia and delighted in submitting special interest articles on various topics to local newspapers. In recognition of her commitment to conservatorship, in 2024 she received the Keeper of the Flame Award from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee of Brazoria County, Inc. which she felt was “an honor of a lifetime”.
Dorothy was a woman of deep faith. She served as lead usher at Blue Run Baptist Church in West Columbia for over 30 years. She also served as Church Mother at Open Door Community Church in Houston for over 20 years. She faithfully supported local events honoring veterans and dutifully served as volunteer secretary for the West Columbia Paradise Cemetery since 1982.
On Friday, May 23, 2025, Dorothy returned to her Heavenly Father, who loaned her to us for almost ninety-two years. She is now rejoicing with those who passed before her including her husband Joe Louis Fisher; mother Beatrice Birdie Black-Lewis; father Fletcher Norwood Lewis; son Darryl Glen Fisher; sisters Lucy Louise Lewis and Armistice Mammie Lewis; brothers Johnny Black “Harry” Lewis, Leon Beshone “Snookie” Lewis, Fletcher Lewis, Jr., Willie James Lewis, and Herman Lee “Big Hunch” Lewis; and great-granddaughter Cayla S. Simple.
Living on to cherish her memory include her children Ronald Elliot Fisher (Tommie) and Donna Jo Fisher; her grandchildren Rhonda L. Fisher, Rovissa E. Fisher, Altrivice D. Revis, Saphonya D. Revis and Darryl K. Dues. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren Chandni E. Fisher, Tevin E. Dent (Annah), Darius U. Harris, Tranquail L. Harris, Terrence B. Woodson II, Teia B. Woodson, Chandi D. Johnson; one great-great-grandchild Micah R. Fisher; sisters-in-law Pinkie Lewis Balka and Ruth Lewis McBride; a host of nieces & nephews; and longtime friends Yvonne Gentry and Selena Flannnel. For all of those who have loved and cared for Dorothy, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Final arrangements have been entrusted to C.T. Baker & Sons Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025 from 5-8 p.m. and a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Blue Run Baptist Church in West Columbia, Texas. She will be laid to rest at West Columbia Paradise Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to West Columbia Paradise Cemetery and the Christian Senior Citizens Center of West Columbia.
