DR. RAYMOND HAROLD BRITTON
August 10, 1925 - May 16, 2026
Dr. Britton’s life was one of personal achievements and goals. He started life as the middle of five children on an oil lease in Oklahoma. His father and mother had moved the family there from West Virginia, so his father could take a job as the lease manager. Life on the lease must have been one of tough times. Other family members often lived with them. His mother died when Dr. Britton was sixteen years old. As the school on the lease only went to the tenth grade, he decided he needed more. So he moved to Shawnee and boarded with a family in order to attend another year of high school. While there, he also worked a dairy to support himself. As WWII was ongoing and the draft was soon to call him, he enlisted in the ARMY.
After basic training, he was sent to Fort Polk, Louisiana, where the course on his life was set. He talked his way into a job at the Officers club by answering “yes" when asked if any of the enlisted men could type. He could not! During his time at Ft. Polk, he met some locals. One was his future Father-in-law, who owned a store in a nearby town where soldiers like to gather on their off time. And then that local man's daughter came home on a weekend visit from nursing school. They fell in love and Raymond and Minnie Lou Pinchback were married on Feb. 9, 1946, in the living room of her parents.
Now the war was over. The young couple had a plan, and it was an ambitious one. Minnie Lou’s uncle was a local dentist. This was a profession that provided good income and respect of the community. It was something Raymond wanted for his family and himself. But he was just out of the service, along with thousands of others. He didn’t even have a high school diploma. With this as the first goal of his plan, he enrolled in Leesville High School – for one day – took the test and graduated high school.
Next goal .. you needed to be a college graduate to be accepted into dental school. So with Minnie Lou working as an RN and multiple part time jobs for himself, he enrolled in the University of Houston. While attending college and working, Raymond and Minnie Lou were also raising their first born, Linda Carol.
College graduation behind him, the plan moved forward with dental school.
Talk about ambition and hard …. study, work, sacrifice, much family help to and from different ones.
Upon passing the state boards, he looked around for an opportunity ….. and found the right one for him. The practice in Sweeny, Texas was being sold as the current dentist was going back into the Navy.
So now the plan was coming to the ultimate goal…. His own practice, a small town to be a part of the community and a place to raise a family. This was now 1957., a memorable year.. moved to Sweeny, opened his practice and the birth of their second child, PAMELA LYNN.
THE STORY GOES ON.. TWO TERMS ON THE City Council, member of Jaycees, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge. He was instrumental in getting a Hospital District along with Dr. Fletcher Hester. He was a hospital board member, a bank director, a director of River Side Country Club. Along with Minnie Lou, they supported local activities in the schools and town.
He was also involved as a business owner. Besides the dental practice he owned a washateria and was a partner in Professional Pharmacy.
He had a plan and goals; He met them with hard work and sacrifices.
But it wasn’t ALL work and no play. He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, and poker games with his friends. These other card sharks named him “shifty”!
