Frank Mentor Burttschell, 98, of Sweeny, TX peacefully stepped into the presence of His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 28, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family.
Frank was born to Frank Manly and Corma Matilda Burttschell on July 17, 1928 in Dime Box, TX. Frank was proud to be the son of a sharecropper and a 5th generation Texan.
After the death of his dad when he was 7 years old, he and his mom moved to Giddings, TX with his younger sister and brother. Later, his mom married Awalt Winters and they formed a blended family with Awalt's 2 sons.
When Frank was 15 years old, he and his brother Doug moved to Houston and worked in the shipyards for a year. He used some of the money to help out at home, and saved some of it. Then he and his brother went back to Giddings and completed high school. After graduation, he and Doug joined the Army Air Corps. He was a radio repairman in the Philippines from 1947-1949, when he was honorably discharged.
Sometime in 1950 at the Airline Dance Hall in Giddings, Frank noticed a beautiful young girl named Lucile. This began a lifelong love story of 72 years; they were married on February 25, 1951 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine, TX.
Frank was a worker. The Humble Oil job took him and Lucile all over west Texas and the valley. In 1958 they moved to Sweeny, where he worked for Phillips 66, and then Amoco. He retired from Amoco as an instrument and electrical supervisor at the Old Ocean Plant and Alvin Plant in 1986 after 24 years.
Frank was active in many community activities, including Little League, Food Pantry, Sweeny United, Feed My Lambs. He was a very active member of Sweeny Methodist Church. He was Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, President of the Sweeny School Board, and a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge.
Frank and Lucile loved to travel. They took many trips through the USA, and also went to Germany/France, and also a tour to Israel.
Frank loved his family. There were many fun filled get-togethers over the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lucile, 2 brothers (Doug and Bobby), his sister Helen, and his son-in-law Rick Calhoun.
He is survived by his brother Howard (Marie), his sister-in-law Gloria, his three daughters Jan Hill (Dennis), Judith Calhoun, and Jill Burttschell (Nenette), numerous nieces and nephews, six wonderful grandchildren Emily (Quenten), Brad (Summer), Jeff (Christine), Brent (Wendy), Rachel (Kolbe), Marc (Lisa), 24 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and special family friends Eric, Georgia, and Samuel.
During his last years, he was blessed with 3 wonderful caregivers: Wilbur Sandlin, Agatha Sanchez, and Stephanie Truitt.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the First Methodist Church of Sweeny. Funeral service to begin at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will follow at the Sweeny Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Frank’s honor to the First Methodist Church of Sweeny, 207 E. First St., Sweeny, Tx 77480.
