George Harvey Humphrey

George Harvey Humphrey, 88, entered eternal rest in the afternoon hours of Monday, February 23, 2026. Born on August 2, 1937 in Freeeport, TX to Coy Arthur Humphrey and Dorothy Lee Stedman Humphrey. He was a member of Columbia High School Class of 1956. He married his high school sweetheart Janet Pauline Avera and raised their five girls in West Columbia. He started his career working for Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company and retired from Phillips 66 Company after 21 years of service. He served 4 years as a City of West Columbia City Councilman and 32 years as a West Columbia Volunteer Fireman, with three of those years as Fire Chief.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Coy and Dorothy Humphrey; wife, Janet Humphrey; daughter, Dorthy Torno; granddaughter Esther Frankum; sons-in-law, Gary Day, Dale Frankum, Gary Rhodes, and brother Bill Humphrey.

He is survived by his daughters, Charlotte Day, Gladys Frankum, Nancy Stephens (Keith), and Georgeann Rhodes; sister, Geraldine Schwettmann (Richard); son-in law, Tim Torno; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be the West Columbia Volunteer Fire Department and honorary pallbearers will be the Men’s Sunday School Class and James Weathers.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Columbia Methodist Church, 315 S. 16th Street, West Columbia, TX. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Haven of Rest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Columbia Methodist Church or the West Columbia Volunteer Fire Department.
