George Setzer

George Richard Setzer, 83, of West Columbia passed from this life on June 22, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Richard was born in Beaumont, Texas to Marvin Lee & Myrtle Lee Setzer. In 1943 the Setzer family moved back to West Columbia where Richard started the 4th grade, graduating from West Columbia High School in 1952. He graduated from Wharton County Junior College and then served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1955 to 1959 while stationed in Germany. He retired from Texas-New Mexico Power Company after 42 years of service in 1993.
Richard's love of sports was one of his greatest passions. He loved to attend the West Columbia High School football games and was a season ticket holder for over 40 years. Some of the other joys Richard enjoyed were country music and family. He and his brother, Kenneth, would entertain the family at holiday celebrations with their guitar playing and singing. Richard loved family get togethers when all of his nieces and nephews would be there for him to tease. Everyone could always tell when he was up to something, by the grin on his face. George Richard Setzer was one of the most positive and happy people ever born and always found good in everyone he met. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin & Myrtle Lee Setzer; brothers, Marvin Ray and Kenneth Lee Setzer; his first wife, Betty Rose Horton Setzer; his stepchildren, Delana Barger and Steven Sheard.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Benge Setzer; son, George Richard Setzer II; stepchildren, Gary Barker and Sharon Brodie; sister, Betty Jo Setzer Mosley & husband, Paul; sisters in law, Doris Setzer and Betty Ruth Setzer; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at 10 am at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia with Alan Gentiles officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm also at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers are Richard Setzer, Tim Setzer, Ken Setzer, Stephen Hibler, Keith Hibler, & Paul Mosley Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Harmon Hoot and Claudine Richers.
