Gillis Dale Hall

July 8, 1949 — December 14, 2023

Sweeny

Gillis Dale Hall, 74, of Sweeny, Texas, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 1:19 p.m. at Kindred Hospital in Sugarland, Texas following a stroke. Gillis was born on July 8, 1949 in Bellville, Texas to Mabry Wesley Hall Sr. and Sammie Louise Sowell Hall. He grew up in Hempstead, Texas before moving to Sweeny and graduating Class of 1967. He attended Brazosport College as well as Wharton County Junior College. After gaining experience and valuable skills while working at various auto parts stores in the area, Gillis and his brother, Sonny, opened G&S Auto Supply on Main Street in Sweeny, Texas in October 1982. G&S Auto served the community for 39 years before closing on September 30, 2022.

Gillis loved the Lord, his family, his collection of classic Ford Mustangs, and helping people. He had the heart of a servant. Gillis was a kind, loving, generous Christian man who greeted all with the same welcoming smile and concern. Gillis was famous for his many one-liners. How many times did he tell his young employees, “If you got time to lean, you got time to clean!”? or “I don’t see so good, but I sure look good!”.

Gillis was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa. You could always find him supporting his children and grandchildren in their various activities. He was also passionate about Ford Mustangs and enjoyed attending classic car shows, swap meets, and car cruises. He especially had fond memories of his trips to the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise in Detroit, Michigan with his nephew, Steven Hall. Gillis also loved Motown music.

Gillis is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Jeanne Eberhart, sister-in-law Durenda Hall, brothers-in-law Rick New and Scott Remington, nephew Steve New, and niece, Candice New Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sandra New Hall, his daughter, Amy Winningham and husband, Lee, of Brenham, Texas, his daughter, Katie Oskoui and husband, Andrew, of Austin, Texas, his grandchildren Layla and Olivia Winningham and Cyrus and Sophie Oskoui, brother, Sonny Hall of Sweeny, nieces and nephews, and other extended family and friends.

Serving as pallbearers are Marty Boone, Steven Hall, Rusty Hall, Andrew Oskoui, Craig Peterson, and Lee Winningham. Honorary Pallbearers include Chuck Azbell, John Bell, Gene Garratt, Sonny Hall, Leslie Meyer, Orin Pinson, Kenneth Srubar, and Harvey Vogel.
