Sweeny, TX

Grover Richard “Dick” Shannon Jr., born on February 28, 1939, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, departed this world on November 10, 2023, in Sweeny, Texas. He is survived by his loving family, including his oldest daughter, Deb Kilgore, her husband Jim Kilgore, his brother Bill Shannon and his wife Bette, and son-in-law Glenn Sanderson, he was blessed with two granddaughters Kristi Brasel and Amy Alford, their husbands Trevor Brasel and Barry Alford, and four great-grandchildren Sydney and Lance Brasel and Lucas and Eli Alford.

Dick is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jurehee Shannon, his parents Grover Richard Shannon Sr. and Evelyne Morgan Shannon, and daughter Gina Sanderson.

He met the love of his life, Jurehee Lucas, in Philips, Texas, and they were married on October 19, 1957. He often reflected on their union, saying, "The Lord sent her to me to smooth out my rough edges, and I had more than most." The couple moved to Sweeny, Texas, in 1962 and became cherished members of the Old Ocean First Baptist Church, where Dick, at the age of 23, was baptized.

For 42 years, Dick dedicated his professional life to Phillips 66, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues and the community. Upon retirement, he embraced his passions, enjoying golf, woodworking (a skill inherited from his father), and treasuring quality time with his family. Although blessed with daughters, Dick considered their husbands his sons as well.

Dick and Jurehee found their spiritual home at New Shores Church in Sweeny, Texas, where their faith was a guiding force in their lives. Dick’'s commitment to his beliefs was unwavering, and his faith was an integral part of the legacy he leaves behind.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Nov 18th at 10 am at New Shores Church, 6303 FM 1459, Sweeny, Tx 77480. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to New Shores Church as a tribute to Dick’s enduring commitment to his faith community.
