Harold Brooks

November 26, 1925 — January 16, 2017

Harold Kay (Pookie) Brooks was born at home on November 26, 1925 to mother, Lela Faye Minze and father John Henry Brooks. He graduated from Sweeny High School in May of 1943 and was drafted into the US Navy in March 1944. He was sent to San Diego, California for basic training, followed up by 8 weeks in Signal School where he finished at the "top of his class." He was then assigned to the USS Banner which transported troops for the invasion of several Pacific Islands held by the Japanese forces during WW II.
After being discharged in 1946 he worked in the oil fields for several months, then attended and graduated from the University of Houston in 1950. Harold went to work for Phillips 66 Co in Sweeny Texas where he remained for 35 years until retirement in 1985. During those years at Phillips both Vivian and Harold worked hard as members of the Sweeny JC's to acquire funds to build the Sweeny Community Hospital which remains in operation today. Together, they owned and operated the Brooks Tax Service for 35 years where they aided local residents with their bookkeeping and income taxes. Harold was a Master Mason in the Old Ocean Masonic Lodge #1284. In addition, they invested in and operated Brooks Rentals where they owned, maintained, and rented single family homes and business units for over 46 years.
