It is with great sadness that the family of Hubert Howard Kennedy announces his passing on May 17, 2024, at the age of 96.

Howard was born in 1927 in North Elm, which was a small farming community northwest of Cameron, Texas, to Rice Max Kennedy and Frankie (McKenzie) Kennedy. He graduated from Yoe High School in 1945 and entered the U.S. Army one month later. He was stationed in Germany as part of the U.S. occupation troops following the end of WWII.

He used his GI bill to attend Texas State University, earning a degree in physical education in 1952. After graduation, he moved to Sweeny, Texas, to work at Phillips Petroleum where he had a career as an electrician and electrical supervisor until he retired after 33 years.

Howard met Nina Joy Ferguson, originally from Hobart, Oklahoma, who had moved to Sweeny to begin her teaching career in music. They married in 1958 and built a loving family together, welcoming two children, John and Joy. Nina and Howard were active members of the First Baptist Church in Sweeny, where he served many years as a deacon. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, volunteering for any work that needed to be done for the church and for those in need.

In 1985, retirement brought a new chapter of adventure for Howard. He and Nina embarked on RV camping trips, exploring the beauty of the country from coast to coast. These journeys were made even more special by the good company of friends.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nina; his son, John Kennedy of Sweeny; his daughter, Joy Kennedy-O’Neill of Lake Jackson, granddaughter Megan Baxter of Angleton, granddaughter Shannon Kennedy of Colorado Springs; and great-grandson, Edward Baxter.

Howard was laid to rest at the Sweeny Cemetery on May 21st, following a private graveside service. A memorial service will be held June 8th, 1:30, at First Baptist Church of Sweeny, 402 N Main St, Sweeny.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at The Fountains Assisted Living facility in Sweeny.
