John Marshall

March 9, 1936 — March 31, 2019

John Carroll Marshall passed from this world on March 31, 2019, at the age of 83.

John was born in Cameron, Texas, on March 9, 1936, the son of Carroll Chapman Marshall and Johnie Mae Moore. His father passed away when John was 16 months old and after his mother remarried, John grew up all over the central, south, and Gulf coast regions of the state. He used to tell of attending five different schools in third grade and living in houses without electricity and plumbing. His family finally settled in Texas City and he graduated from Texas City High School where he lettered in both baseball and basketball. He attended Wharton County Junior College on a basketball scholarship and completed his education at Sam Houston State University with a degree in Business.

After graduating, John began his career with Monsanto Chemical Company in Texas City in 1959. By the time he retired in 1992, he'd had a long successful career that took him from Texas City to Luling, Louisiana, and later Nitro, West Virginia. All along the way he made an ever growing number of life long friends and enjoyed the experiences of living in different parts of the country, other than snow.

However, John always planned on retiring early and was eager to return to Texas to be near friends and family. In 1992, he built his first house in Columbia Lakes were he fulfilled his dream of living on a golf course. John was always active. In earlier years he played softball (fast pitch) and was an active golfer (two holes in one). He enjoyed traveling the world with Kay and was always planning the next trip. Mardi Gras will never be the same again. He enjoyed his family and a large circle of friends and was the life of any party he attended. A big man, more than just physically; he filled a room and never met a stranger. He truly loved life.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Carroll and Johnie Mae, his grandmother, Emma Moore, step-father, Buck Darwin, step-brother, Roy Darwin, and his former wife, Olive Marshall. John is survived by his wife of 20 years, Kay Marshall, his son, Mike Marshall, step-daughters, Meaghan Solay (Tom) and Shelley Wood (David), his grandchildren, Thais Gruning, Olivia Marshall, Caroline Marshall, and William Bailey Wood, and daughter-in-law, Kathy Miller.

A celebration of John's life is planned for Saturday, April 20, at 2pm at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia.
