Judge Curlee (Sonny)

Judge Melvin Curlee (Sonny), age 85, of West Columbia, TX passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2021.

Sonny was born August 2, 1936, to Robert Earl (Doc) and Zelma (Brucie) Curlee in Rockdale, TX. He attended school in West Columbia, TX and graduated from the West Columbia High School. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in West Columbia. His faith in God and Jesus as his Savior was strong.  Every day he would say his prayers and how grateful he was for God giving him another day.  He made a career in the Pipefitting Industry and later, after retiring, he became an Electrician’s Helper for his brother-in-law, Wesley Scott.  He was a beloved Dandy, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend to many.

Some of the things he enjoyed doing along with spending time with his family were golfing, building and flying model airplanes, fishing, dancing, and cooking. He was a regular at the local coffee/donut shop to visit with his brother Bubba and his friends.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents Doc and Brucie Curlee, brothers-in-law Dan Orr and Wesley Scott, son-in-law Richard Kramer, nephews Mickey Spence, Bobby Gene Curlee, Tommy Crouch (Renae) and great nephew Mason Curlee.

Surviving family members are his son Dale Curlee (Rhonda), and daughters Angela Kramer and Marilyn Swanner (James), 4 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren, siblings Marilyn Orr, Shirley Scott, and Bubba Curlee (Glenda), along with multiple nephews and nieces.

Pallbearers will be Jeb Smith, John Presley, Jeremy Swanner, Mike Orr, Darryl Orr, Randy Spence, Allen Spence, Danny Curlee, and Steve Weems.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at C.T. Baker & Sons Funeral Home in West Columbia.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 9, 2021, in the chapel of C.T. Baker & Sons Funeral Home, with Pastor Ryan Lintelman officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Haven of Rest Cemetery.
