Lelia Gutierrez

Lelia M. Gutierrez, age 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

Lelia was born on December 20, 1926 in Bay City, Texas to Antonio and Adelina Mendiola. She graduated from Bay City High School in 1946. Lelia was employed and retired from the Sweeny Independent School District. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Sweeny.

Lelia’s greatest joy was being around her family, sitting around talking and laughing. She loved hosting all the holiday gatherings. She taught her family that it is important to have family get-togethers and that family should always love each other and be kind to one another.

She is preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Lupe Salinas, Eugene Mendiola, Manuel Mendiola, Irene Luna and Bertha Garcia; husband, Leon P. Gutierrez, and daughter, Bertha DeLeon.

Lelia is survived by her son, Robert M. Gutierrez of Sweeny; daughters, Irene Cortinas and husband, René of Angleton and Mary Ellen Gutierrez and husband, Benny Perez of Austin; son-in-law, Amos DeLeon of Sweeny; grandchildren, Carol Ann Treviño and husband, Eddie of Angleton, Robert Cortinas and wife, Christina of Angleton, Gary DeLeon of Pearland, Ryan DeLeon and wife, Brittany of Manvel, Victoria Perez of Austin, and Robert Melendez and wife, Rebeca of Houston; great-grandchildren, Trey Cortinas of Angleton, Trent and Hannah Treviño of Angleton, Ariana Ruiz of Angleton, and Liam DeLeon of Manvel; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 2, 2020 at C. T. Baker & Sons Funeral Home in West Columbia from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, with a rosary being recited at 7:00 pm.

Funeral mass will be held 10:00 am Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at C. T. Baker & Sons Funeral Home in West Columbia. Burial will follow at Sweeny Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Cortinas, Gary DeLeon, Ryan DeLeon, Trey Cortinas, Trent Treviño, and Eddie Treviño. Honorary pallbearers will be René Cortinas, Amos DeLeon, and Benny Perez.

Lelia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew her. She was a courageous and kind-hearted woman who believed that family was everything. In her own words, “Love each other like I love you, forever.” Lelia was the glue that held our family together. Everything she did was for her family. She always made sure her family was taken care of and she loved them beyond measure.

Lelia, Mommy, Grandma, and Great-Grandma, you have touched our lives in a way that we could never put into words. We will miss you and we will keep you in our hearts forever.
