Mac Barrow

June 4, 1939 — June 30, 2021

Brazoria

Mac Hunter Barrow, 82, from Alvin, Texas, peacefully passed into the arms of Jesus Christ on June 30, 2021, in Houston Methodist Hospital with his wife and son by his side.   Mac was born in Brazoria, Texas on June 4, 1939, to Madie and Melvin Barrow.  He was educated in Brazoria and West Columbia, graduating from West Columbia High School in 1957.  During that time, he excelled in his academics as an honor student and in football, serving as co-captain of the 1956 Roughnecks District Championship team and obtaining All District guard/linebacker honors.  He was also honored by his 1957 Class as the Most Popular Senior Boy.  Mac went on to Lamar University where he obtained his B.S.M.E. in 1962.  The Lord then brought him together in marriage with his wife Jean in 1963, and they spent 58 wonderful years together.

Mac began his career with Monsanto in Texas City in 1962 and later moved to the Amoco Chemicals Chocolate Bayou plant in Alvin in 1970 until he retired as Maintenance Manager in 1998.  Mac was known as a tough but fair manager.  He loved his co-workers and enjoyed the challenges of his job.

Mac's best attribute was his faith in Jesus Christ.  He worshiped his Savior for 37 years at South Park Baptist Church in Alvin and was a dedicated Christian who served in many areas of the church throughout the years, including Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Royal Ambassador leader, and, most recently, as a teacher in the Beach Club Student Ministry.

He also served the Alvin community as a youth coach and as a Regent for 12 years on the Board of Alvin Community College.

Mac's most amazing service was to his family.  His wife Jean was his best friend, constant companion, and his deepest love.  He was a dedicated husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, son, and brother.  Known as Pop to his grandchildren, he loved his family with his whole heart and was always present when needed or to give Godly wisdom and encouragement.  He put his family first and had a very special bond with his son, Hunter, who loved him as a hero and as a solid Christian example.  Pop and Nan were always in the stands for school, church, and athletic events for their grandchildren.  They were his true pride and joy.

Mac was preceded in death by his parents Madie and Melvin Barrow, his brother Bill Barrow, and in-laws Cleo Dodd and Arch Rater.

He is survived by his wife Jean of Alvin, son Hunter Barrow and wife, Kara, of Houston, and three grandchildren Madie, Mac II, and Jackson Barrow.  He is also survived by his sister, Darlene Balkum of Alvin, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

The family would like to thank their friends for their prayers and support, as well as Mac’s cardiologist Dr. Stuart Solomon for the compassionate and excellent care he gave Mac for 18 years.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to South Park Baptist Church Student Beach Club Ministry.

A visitation with friends and loved ones will be on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at South Park Baptist Church, 1718 S. Johnson St., in Alvin, TX., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m.  The service will be live streamed at www.facebook.com/southparkchurchalvin.  Graveside services will take place at the Brazoria Cemetery at 3:00 p.m.
