Malcolm Price Atwood, 89, of Sweeny, TX passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018. He was born in Edinburg, TX on November 19, 1928 and reared in Johnson County near Cleburne, TX.

Malcolm was a resident of Sweeny for 39 years. He was employed in the Sweeny I.S.D. from l975-l986. He began as Assistant Superintendent and ended his service as Superintendent of Schools. During his 33 year career he was a teacher/coach for 7 years, High School Principal for 6 years, and 20 years in Central Administration. He began his college studies at Tarleton State College and received his B.B.A. Degree and M.Ed. Degree from Texas Tech University. He pursued advanced studies at Mid-Western University, North Texas State University, University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Christian University, and West Texas A & M University. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sweeny.

He is survived by three children: Martin Atwood and wife Joan of Houston, Richard Atwood and wife Beatrice of Basel, Switzerland, and Jana Schmidt and husband Don of Jones Creek; seven grandchildren: Camille Atwood Merck and husband Robbie, Lindsay Atwood Horton and husband J. B., David Atwood, Mirjam Atwood Meissburger and husband Jan, Jonas Atwood, Shannon Schmidt Combest and husband Bryan, and Katie Schmidt Gibson and husband Montana; four great grandchildren: Hailey and Colton Merck and Audrey and Ben Horton; brother David E. Atwood and wife Dianne; sister-in-law Geraldine Atwood Owens and several nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Zula Jane Wood Atwood, parents Sterling Price and Janie Elizabeth Putnam Atwood, and brother Charles Wilmon Atwood.

He remained active in each community where he lived and worked. He served along with other FBC Sweeny men in a large remodeling of their church several years ago and remained active in his church throughout his years at Sweeny. He served as a FBC Sweeny Trustee and on their Finance Committee for many years. He was also active in community organizations such as Lions Club, Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club. He served on the Sweeny City Council, the Sweeny Chamber of Commerce, and supervised college students who were pursuing their public school administrator certificates. He was in Phi Delta Kappa, a professional school administrators organization and was recognized by the Texas Senate for his service as Superintendent and his dedication to the youth of Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 12, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Sweeny, TX with Rev. John Price officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until service time on Thursday at the church. Burial will follow at Sweeny Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Tommy Zajicek, Robby Woodard, Charlie Stevenson, Robert Foster, Buddy Jackson, and Charles Crouch. Honorary pallbearers will be John Ed Marsh, Pat Patterson, Frank Burttschell, Howard Kennedy, and Kenneth Lott.

A special thanks for the dedicated care giving from Jessica Jones, Country Village Care Courtyard nurses and staff, Oak Village Healthcare and Heart to Heart Hospice teams.
