Mary Adeline Burke Coburn was born on July 19, 1918 in McDade, Texas in the Knobbs Community, and entered her heavenly home on Monday, March 15, 2021 at the age of 102.
Mary was the third child born to Thomas Hugh Burke and Cordie Mae Plemmons Burke. Mary grew up in Lee County with her four sisters and one brother. Her Father was a farmer and her mother took care of the home and children. Mary’s family attended church faithfully, having to go by wagon since they had no car. In 1930, at the age of 12, Mary and the younger girls were divided up among relatives due to the death of her parents. Mary went to live with her Aunt and Uncle in Beaumont, Texas. In 1933, Mary’s neighbor introduced her to his friend, Bill. In 1934, they were engaged and on February 7, 1935 they married. They spent 76 years together before the Lord took Bill home.
Mary and Bill had four children together. They had two girls, both of whom passed away at a young age, and then they had the boys, William Charles (Billy) and Robert Lee (Bob).
Mary dedicated her life to serving Christ. She faithfully studied her Bible and shared God’s love. Mary started teaching young children in Sunday School at the First Baptist Church in Old Ocean when it first started as a church. In later years she taught her ladies Sunday School Class, and she loved all the ladies in the class dearly. They decorated their Sunday School room for a Bride’s room and dedicated it to Mary. Her life revolved around activities at the church from teaching children’s mission, to Women’s WMU to the Joy group. Serving Christ was her life.
