Funeral service for Michael Don Azbell will be 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at C T Baker & Sons Funeral Home, 634 S Columbia Dr., West Columbia, Texas 77486. Visitation will be on Friday, April 24, 2026 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the West Columbia Volunteer Fire Department, 314 E Clay Street, West Columbia, Texas 77486.
Michael Don Azbell, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, at the age of 71 surrounded by his loved ones at his home in West Columbia, TX.
Born on December 18, 1954, in Dumas, Texas. The son of James & Stacye Azbell. He grew up in Electra, Texas before moving to West Columbia, Texas where he finished school and graduated from Columbia High in 1974.
After graduating he then made the selfless choice to join the United States Air Force where he served in Vietnam & the Gulf War. He was an honored and decorated military veteran. He retired in 1991.
He was a loving husband to his wife JJ, Michael was a pillar of strength and support for his family. Together they raised their blended family. He was a devoted father, always there to offer guidance, love, and a hearty laugh. He cherished his grandchildren most of all. His presence brought warmth and joy to those around him.
Mike had many passions in life, including wood working and electrical projects, which led him to become a master electrician and start up T.H.E Total Home Electric. This passion led him to his final career as the building inspector for the city of West Columbia, a city he loved & valued, he wore this title proudly.
In 2008 Mike joined the West Columbia Volunteer Fire Department holding multiple ranks up to assistant chief. He retired in 2025 with 17 years of service. This is what he was most proud of and devoted himself fully to serving his community and wore his uniform proudly.
He is proceeded in death by parents James & Stacye Azbell and best friends Flem Roger’s and Randy Landrum.
Survived by wife JJ Azbell; Children Ronnie Wiley (wife Janine), James Clifford Wiley (Kayla), Adam Michael Azbell (wife Lyn), Holly Azbell-Janak, and Dustin Goff; Grandchildren Jordyn “Sweettater”, Mallory, Dylan, Halee, Kailyn, Kimber, Kenzie, Maddie, Millie, Bethany, Harper and Brody; Siblings Thomas Azbell (wife Linda), Sandy Menard (husband Larry), Cynthia Preas, James Alan Azbell (wife Mishelle); and many Nieces & Nephews.
