Mikel Ray Vigus, 66, passed from this life on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at his home in West Columbia, Texas.

Mikel was born on February 28, 1954 in Fort Benning, GA to Raymond and Ruth Vigus. While his father served in the Army Mikel spent his childhood in Mineral Wells, TX and Copperas Cove, TX. He loved team sports and played football and baseball before graduating from Copperas Cove High School in 1972. He served honorably in the United States Air Force for four years before attending the University of Texas and earning a degree in Education. Mikel began his teaching and coaching career at Bastrop, TX, then Copperas Cove but soon moved to West Columbia. Mikel met his future wife Jo Ann while they were both teaching in the Columbia Brazoria ISD. He served in numerous teaching and coaching roles in West Columbia until moving to Sweeny to continue his career. In 1996 the Sweeny girls’ softball team he coached won the Texas UIL State 3A Championship. Mikel had a passion for helping students learn and excel in sports. Mikel also enjoyed traveling to visit historic sites, fishing and building and launching rockets. Mikel also loved flying and earned his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying small planes with his family to various locations in Texas.

Mikel is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Jo Ann, and their son, Braxton Vigus.  Mikel was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Maria Vigus and Rose Vigus. He is also survived by his brother, Eddie Vigus of Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Doyle Cook. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Vicki Cook of Lake Jackson, TX and his sister-in-law, Kathy (George) King of Spring Branch, TX; along with one niece, three nephews and four great-nephews.

There will be a visitation and celebration of Mikel’s life from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday October 2, 2020 at C. T. Baker & Sons Funeral home in West Columbia. A private family graveside service officiated by Jamie Walker and burial will take place on Saturday morning, October 3, 2020 at the Old Columbia Cemetery in West Columbia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mikel’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Gideons International or to the charity of your choice.
