Norma Papa

April 21, 1937 — February 23, 2022

Norma Jean Bryer Papa, 85, went to be with the Lord at her home with her husband at her side on February 23, 2022, at 10:00AM. She laid down to rest and received the best rest of her life.

Norma was born April 21, 1937, in Gallipolis, Ohio, to Woodrow Chase Byer and Virginia Dray Byer. Norma accepted Jesus Christ at the age of 10 on June 29, 1947. Her fondest memories as a young child were her salvation day (6.29.1947) and when she and her girlfriend would go to first Baptist Church Sunday School and then go down the street to the Methodist Church Sunday School class.

Norma worked and retired as a Catalog Manager for J. C. Penney in Lake Jackson, TX, for over 20 years.  She mentored, witnessed, and hired many people in the catalog department. She loved to cook and entertain people. Her favorite time of the year was Thanksgiving and Christmas

Norma was involved in the United Way campaign in September of 1994. She gave a story about her son who was in need of heart repair support and received support from United Way.

Norma was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns (Jim Brown) and Cincinnati Reds (Pete Rose). She was also involved in the Babe Ruth League and Pony League baseball programs in Point Pleasant, WV.

In her later years she just loved to be home and rest. Her favorite Pastors were Jack Stanley, his son Mike Stanley, Wayne Hudson, and Lee Watson.

Norma loved crocheting and many friends and family have received beautiful afghans and doilies to remember her by.

Norma is survived by her husband, Ronald Papa, they were married for 41years; Sister, Joyce Wiest of Columbus, Ohio; Her children, Cindy (Roger) Campbell of Gallipolis Ferry, West Virginia, Richard (Lisa) Thomas Jr. of Alvin, Texas, Christopher Byer (Michelle) Thomas of Angleton, Texas; grandchildren, Brittnee Leija, Sarah Ruckstuhl, Ashley Thomas, Bethanie Thomas, and Jonathan Thomas; and five great Grandchildren, Olivia, Lola, Sebastian Leija, Amaryllis and Liam Baxter.

Norma Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow Chase Byer and Virginia Dray Byer; her Grandmother, Clara Walter; and her first Grandchild, Craig Lee Campbell.

Services will be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2022  at Wild Peach Baptist Church in Brazoria, TX. Viewing will be from 10:00 to 11:00 AM and service from 11:00 to 12:00 P.M., with Pastor Jake Tucker officiating.  Arrangements are being made by Baker funeral Home in West Columbia, TX.
