Richard Dale Chafin, 85, of Sweeny passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022, in Houston, Texas. Richard was born on August 4, 1936 in Kilgore, Gregg County, Texas to J. B. (Bert) Chafin and Merle (Putman) Chafin.

Richard graduated from West Columbia High School in 1954. He attended Wharton and Alvin Junior Colleges. Richard served in the U. S. Army stationed in the United States and Germany. He was an enormously proud veteran and patriot. Richard was a board member for the Sweeny-Old Ocean Little League and Babe Ruth League serving in several capacities. He was past president, secretary-treasurer of the local chapter, Frank Phillips Men’s Club.

Richard retired from Phillips Petroleum, Sweeny, Texas in 1995 after 38 years of service. In retirement, Richard was blessed to spend 27 years traveling the United States in his motorhome with special love for Colorado with his wife, family, and friends. He loved the outdoors and being the travel guide for everyone on their many trips. Richard enjoyed watching his grandsons playing football and baseball as well as children of close friends. He enjoyed people and visiting whether storytelling, sharing his knowledge and wisdom on so many subjects especially his fondness for classic cars. He and his dog, Pepper, constantly by his side, enjoyed their daily walks visiting with neighbors along the way.

Richard is survived by his wife, Billye Rose Chafin, daughters Shelli Hoff and husband Marshall and their sons, Colton and Caden; Susan Davidson and husband Dwight and their sons, Corey and Josh; grandson Kevin Staggs; stepdaughter Leslie McMahan and husband Barry and son Ethan; stepdaughter-in-law Jennifer Theriot and son Ben; sisters Suzanne Seal and husband Jack, Nancy Bailey, and sister-in-law Carolyn Chafin as well as great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends who became extended family.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, former wife, Dolores, brothers James Marion Chafin, John Paul Chafin, stepsons Anthony (AT) Theriot and Ricky Staggs.

Family will receive friends prior to the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 22 at the First Baptist Church, Sweeny. Funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor John Price officiating.
