Obituary
Shirley Faye Grovey-Johnican was born on February 28, 1954 to Claudis Curtis Grovey, Sr. and Ruth Ella Grovey in New Gulf, Texas.
Shirley accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age.
She obtained her LVN nursing degree from Wharton County Junior College in 1973. Shirley began her nursing career at Matagorda General Hospital and then worked at nursing homes throughout Brazoria County. She also worked as a LVN for Dr. Oandasan in Lake Jackson, TX before accepting a nursing position for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice where she served for 20 years before retiring in 2009. After her retirement she worked briefly as a visiting nurse for the Brazoria County Jail.
Shirley’s hobbies included cooking, horseback riding and helping others. She was a great friend and listening ear to all. She earned the name “Mama Shelly” as she was a mother figure to many.
She made her final transition departing this earthly life on Thursday, July 3,2025. She is preceded in death by her father Claudis Grovey Sr.
Our beloved Shirley leaves a lifetime of precious and loving memories to her children Grady Johnican, Jr. and Sonceria Johnican, brothers Claudis Grovey, Jr. (Shawn), Michael Grovey (Pamela), and sisters Ruthie Grays, Alice Grovey, Deloris Williams (Jeff), Surterna Grovey and Erma Davis.
Extended family and friends Tanisha Grovey, Melanie Grovey, Chastidy-Taylor Haynes, Kai Jordan, Ayana Grovey, Janetta Grovey, Janelle Grovey, LaWanna Amey, LaCosha Amey, LaGayla Amey, Ruby Dean, Curtis Sanders, John Wright, Benford Williams, Antony Quinn Wright, Gayla Rebector, and Sisters from the Clemens and Retrieve Units-Carol Payne, Julia Vela, Elvira Rodriguez and Mary Fountain Perkins.
Devoted cousins/friends she often referred to as her sisters and brothers Larry Amey (Honeymooner), Lettie Warren (Tu Lou), Larry Baugh (Farmer Brown), Ursula Tims (Her Angel), Alexia Walker (Pippi), Sherron Ware, Kevin Brown, Ray and Sharonda Romo and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
