William Henry Long Jr.

William H (Bill) Long 77, of Sweeny, passed away at his home on Saturday October 5, 2024. He was born in Wharton on October 14, 1946. He grew up in Sweeny and graduated from Sweeny High School in 1965. He loved his small town, and worked tirelessly on the Sweeny Texas history webpage and the Sweeny ISD Walk of Honor Committee. He started dating the love of his life Nancy Shannon their sophomore year and married her in 1966. They were married 58 years. They had 2 daughters Cherry Elaine Long Peterson and Brenda Joyce Long Lanza.

After graduation Bill went to work with his Dad at Brown Well Service and then a few years at the sulfur plant in Newgulf. In October 1967, he started working at Phillips 66 and had almost 40 years of service until his retirement in 2006. He was a Company man, working on countless maintenance projects and turnarounds during his years there. After retirement, he enjoyed sitting on his back porch and watching the San Bernard River flow by.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Joyce Long, his sister Brenda Sue, his aunt Jo Gwen Underwood and uncle Son Bass, and his in laws Clarence and Lil Shannon.

Bill was survived by his wife Nancy, his daughters Cherry Peterson (Craig) and Brenda Lanza, his granddaughters Shannon Peterson and Shelby Andrews (Lance), his grandsons ET Peterson (Kayla), Torin Lanza and Declan Lanza, and 3 great grandchildren Case and MataLea Peterson, Andi Andrews and a new granddaughter due in January. He was also survived by his 3 brothers Don Long (Laura), Bob Long, Kirk Long (Marilyn), sister in law Anita (Jim) Warren and brother in law Basil (Sue) Shannon. He also was loved by his many cousins, nieces and nephews. Bill loved when the ever growing Long family gathered every Christmas and during the summer at the river. 

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Wednesday October 9th from 5-7 pm and his funeral service on Thursday October 10th at 10:00 a.m. at C.T. Baker Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Sweeny Cemetery. 

Serving as Pallbearers will be Craig Peterson, ET Peterson, Lance Andrews, Jerry Long, Bobby Joe Long, Danny Long, and Brett Carter.
