Leonidas Lafayette "Butch" McMurrey Jr., born on February 24th, 1940, passed away at home on Thursday September 9th, 2021. Butch grew up in West Columbia, Texas, graduating from Columbia High School in 1958. After high school, Butch graduated Alvin Junior College in 1961 and Stephen F. Austin State College in 1965. After college, Butch was inducted into the United States Army and served honorably in Fort Richardson, Alaska and Fort Wolters, Texas. Butch retired as pipefitter, spending his career with multiple contractors while working at Dow. Butch was an accomplished tennis player, competing throughout Texas and winning multiple trophies and awards. Besides tennis, Butch enjoyed riding his motorcycle, rain, or shine and also enjoyed dancing.
Butch is preceded in death by his parents, Leonidas L. McMurrey and Anna Laura Weems McMurrey, daughter Dani Michelle McMurrey, previous wife Cherry Hynes McMurrey, and numerous cousins and extended family.
Butch is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Colette M. Travis; his sister Laura Ann Wanstrath; stepsons Brian Ford (Donna) of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Jimmy Ford (Adriann) of Tacoma, Washington; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families.
Funeral services for Butch will be held at Columbia United Methodist Church, 315 S. 16th St, in West Columbia, Texas, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2021.
The family will welcome loved ones and friends on Thursday, September 16, 2021, one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Old Columbia Cemetery.
